It all begins the night before
A cauldron of emotions bursting galore
Churning the life that has slipped by
Making many a soldier sigh
I wake my way into the dawn
With all my mental faculties gone
Thinking of the day that lies ahead
I don my attire as the papers bled
I, as always, never standing a chance
A veteran rookie in his favourite stance
But I put the mask of bravery on
Just to fight out my opponent’s scorn
Visions of sympathy engulf my mind
Success in it can you hardly find
But I see my coach looking on
His hope makes my resolve strong
The meek bell ends a deafening roar
The sound of silence soothes no more
The champion moves like an ace
Reality hits me in the face
The contest ends before it starts
People seek their way to play darts
The game makes for entertaining prose
And I get another broken nose
Twenty years is a time too long
Today I am not even half as strong
I open my mouth for one last lie
But the want to fight will never die
